Be the Light


Tell us a little about yourself:

I have been a Registered Nurse for 23 years. I got my license straight out of nursing school (Angelo State University-go Rams!!). I worked in Adult Intensive Care for the first ten years of my career. I loved the challenge of keeping people alive through serious illnesses, and helping families to cope. But I also dealt with death of patients, and I found myself becoming depressed over time. Then after I had my first son, I realized that there was a happier place to work in the hospital, and I transferred to St. David's Medical Center to work Women's Services. I take care of women that have just had babies, pregnant women that have complications and need to be hospitalized, and women that have had gynecology surgeries, like hysterectomies. I truly love my job! I love teaching new mothers how to recover from childbirth, and take care of themselves and their new baby. I work with a wonderful group of ladies that have become like a second family to me.

I am also a wife to John, my hunk of a husband, and mother to my two boys Lucas-12 and Evan-9. My boys are my pride and joy. Becoming a mother was probably the BEST thing I have ever done. So while I am constantly surrounded by women at work, I have my three boys to come home to. This month, I will celebrate 45 years of trips around the Sun!

How long have you been practicing yoga?

I started practicing yoga in January of this year. I had been reading a lot of buzz about Soul Society Yoga on Facebook, and I signed up for the beginner series to see what it was all about. I had always been curious about yoga, but just never tried it. I was hooked from the very beginning.

What drew you to the practice?

I love the idea that it is OK to give myself the gift of taking care of myself. As a caretaker, wife, and mother, I have focused on the needs of others, often putting my own needs aside. Yoga gives me the chance to "refill my cup" so I can continue to care for others. I love the breathing techniques, and the focus it gives me to tune everything else out. I love setting an intention for my practice each day. I love becoming stronger, more flexible, and more self confident. Starting my yoga practice has truly been life changing for me. I feel like I can handle every day stresses better. I have started leading my co-workers in some deep cleansing breaths before our shift starts to set a positive "Vibe" for the day. I am now a life long member of the "Good Vibe Tribe"!!

At this point, what is your favorite aspect of the practice of yoga?

My favorite aspect of the practice of yoga is the MINDFULNESS. Just being present in that moment, and breathing. Moving my body in ways that I never imagined that I could, and feeling so refreshed and ready to face the world when we are finished. I also appreciate that we are all at different levels in our practice, and there is no judgement. I have been able to step out of my comfort zone. I focus on how I feel, and not what I look like doing the poses. I am most challenged by the balancing poses, but I will continue to get stronger and improve. I also appreciate that we end each class giving gratitude for our strength. Soul Society Yoga is my HAPPY place!

What would you tell anyone thinking about trying yoga, who might be a little apprehensive?

I would encourage anyone that is thinking about trying yoga, to give it a shot! Amanda is an amazing teacher!! She is encouraging, and uplifting. The beginner series teaches you about yoga, breathing, and the basic poses, but all the classes include modifications for all skill levels. The classes are offered daily, and at a variety of times, which works well for a varying schedule like mine! I have made it a point to register myself for all the classes I can attend at the beginning of the month. That way, I have committed to "me" time. The Soul Society website is easy to navigate, and the studio is beautiful with a view of Lake Travis. The "tribe" is also very welcoming and friendly. Come join us!!

You are always a ray of sunshine & so uplifting to be around! What do you do to maintain such a positive outlook?

I think being grateful for all the blessings in my life. It is hard to be negative, when you are giving thanks!! I lost my mother to a lengthy illness when I was 11. I feel like God got me through that hard time, and has blessed me since. There is always something to be grateful for. Even through hard times, God is with me. I lean on my faith when I become discouraged, and I ask God to help me. I want to be a "light" to shine for others!
